Mark Guinness World Records Day by Katching up on Saudi Arabia’s Impressive Winning Streak

Join us as we uncover the Kingdom’s wonderful and wacky achievements, including organising the biggest gathering of virtual assistant devices and the development of the world’s largest LEGO brick F1 car

The Kingdom never does things by half measures, so it’s no surprise the nation has broken over 233 records to date. With an eye for innovation and a government that is constantly embracing the latest technological advances, sustainable practices, and bold cultural initiatives, Saudi Arabia continues to set new benchmarks on the world stage. So, what better time to explore the Kingdom’s boundary-pushing achievements than the Guinness World Records Day?

The Guinness Book of World Records

Before we dive into the Kingdom’s winning streak, let’s first take a look at the book behind it all. At one stage or another, everyone’s curiosity has led them to flick through the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records, gawking at Diana Armstrong’s 12.86 m long fingernails or learning about Robert Wadlow, named the tallest man to ever live at 2.72 m. The enduring pull of the unusual and unbelievable has kept the book a staple for generations.

First published in 1955, the Guinness Book of World Records has brought out a new edition every year since. The idea came about when Sir Hugh Beaver, manager of Guinness Breweries in Ireland, found himself in a debate over the fastest game bird in Europe. With no reliable source to prove his case, he set out to create a definitive collection of records, and the Guinness Book of World Records was born.

Years later, in 2004, the first-ever Guinness World Records Day was held. Funny enough, this was the same year the book won its own record, becoming the best-selling copyrighted book of all time.

Saudi Arabia’s Record-Breaking Moments

Celebrating the largest, tallest, smallest, and everything in between, the Kingdom has received its fair share of Guinness World Records certificates over the years. That being said, getting recognition isn’t straightforward, and every potential record must be thoroughly researched by Guinness World Records to ensure it meets the strict criteria. However, this clearly hasn’t stopped Saudi Arabia from making its mark in the coveted book.

Some of the Kingdom’s most recent wins include orchestrating the largest display of virtual assistant devices. This record was broken in Diriyah on Saudi Arabia’s 94th National Day, when the celebration featured more than 500 Amazon Echo devices and Alexa voice assistants. In the same region, the annual city festival, Noor Riyadh, has secured 14 Guinness World Records, including the title of the largest light art festival in the world, the largest LED structure, and the brightest suspended ornament.

Riyadh’s achievements aren’t just about putting on a show; they’re also about making a real difference for the Kingdom. In 2023, the Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, received the certificate for the creation of the largest sustainable farm in the world, spanning a whopping 3.2 million sq. m.

As for Jeddah, the city set the record for the longest table at 1508 m in 2015. The sprawling setup was used to serve a special iftar for members of the community and various charities. Later in 2021, the Saudi Automobile and Motorcycle Federation claimed the title for the largest LEGO brick F1 car, measuring 5.73m x 2.32m x 1.15m.

Saudi women have also brought home the big titles. In 2023, Olympic athlete Kariman Abuljadayel achieved the fastest time to row 10 km in open water, completing the challenge in 57 minutes and 24 seconds – we’re out of breath just thinking about it. Ritaj Al-Hazmi holds two Guinness World Records, becoming the world’s youngest female newspaper columnist at just 15 and the youngest female to publish a book series at 12.

Additionally, Rayyanah Barnawi, Saudi Arabia’s first female astronaut, became the first Arab woman to travel to space in 2023 as part of the Axiom Mission 2. During her time on the International Space Station, she participated in 14 microgravity research projects.

In a country where light festivals glow brighter, farms stretch further, and athletes row faster, records feel less like exceptions and more like tradition. Celebrating Guinness World Records Day is just another chance to cheer on the Kingdom’s knack for making the extraordinary happen every day.
